Why We Shouldn't Use Oil In Cooking

Why we shouldn’t use Oil

These days it is thought that oil which we use to prepare food is not good for health be it ground nut oil or butter or mustard oil and even the olive oil which was supposed to be very good for health is no more considered as an ideal food. But unfortunately it is usually thought that if we make food without oil it is not tasty. Since we don’t do as much physical labour as our forefathers used to do , that is one of the main reason why the oils are not suitable for our health. So now if someone consumes anything which has fats like milk, oils or things like that then he or she has to do a lot of exercises or risk being fat.

The negative effects of Oil and other fatty substances:

1. The fats in oil, butter, cheese, butter etc get lodge in the lumen of the arteries thus decreasing the capacity of the arteries forcing the heart to pump blood with more pressure so it can reach to the end organs, which increases blood pressure and chances of heart attack.

2. Cholesterol is usually in high quantity in oils which again gets deposited in to the lumen of the arteries and again increases risk of heart diseases.

3. Oils have hugh quantities of triglycerides which are now considered to be more dangerous than the high density cholesterol. Triglycerides are complex chemicals. They have a hugh role in hardening of arteries and a hugh role in strokes. The chemical formula of triglycerides is HOCH2CH(OH)CH2OH + RCO2H + R'CO2H + R''CO2H → RCO2CH2CH(O2CR')CR'' + 3H2O

This is made from the mixture of carbon and hydrogen atoms.

4. Oil increases body fat which can lead to breathlessness, reduced stamina, back aches, diabetes, joint pains, high blood pressure etc.

It has been seen that most of our fat requirements are met with the oil present in the food naturally and we do not need to add fat or oil in preparing food. We should say good bye to the fats and oils if we need to save our self from the above diseases and live a healthy life. In my next hubs I would try to explore about how to cook delicious food without any oil or shall I say try to cook food with Zero Oil

The doctors are more likely to complain that I am not fat enough. I only use cooking oil to keep things from burning.

Basically a person should, I think, try to get a balance. Cheese, for example, has fats but is also a very good source od calcium.

You make some excellent points! I thought I would share my daughter's cooking technique with you. At first, I thought it very odd. But after tasting the food she prepares, I have changed my mind. It's really quite tasty. She uses water in place of oil. She fries her food in water! Which technically isn't frying. But she doesn't put much in, so you can't really call it boiling. The second thing she does is use copious amounts of her favorite spices and seasonings. I have adopted her method for some of my food. However, it won't work for fried chicken. lol.

I always thought "Extra Virgin Olive Oil" was ok to use...Anyway good informative Hub Sweetie. I too use water and lots of Natural spices and NO salts when cooking and Lemon too brings out flavors.

B malin, even if olive oil is supposed to be better than other oils but still it is pure fat and has all calories of fat in it.

nice lens, but i think we really can't live with zero oil diet, the key is to have moderation or opt for the healthier oils.

Hi midnightbliss, you are right but there are people who are now living on 0 oil diet. What oils are there in food naturally, they are enough for body.

The use of oils in cooking has certainly hurt the health of people, especially here in the Us where obesity is epidemic. But I still think that using oil sparingly won't hurt. My mother always said "everything in moderation." But less is best when it comes to fats and oils.

Ofocurse dolores if people use in moderation then there wont be a problem but unfortunately most people live to eat and not the otherway round. Yes fat does make food very tasty but it extracts its price

Thanks for the advice, nice hub! I remember when in my home, several years ago, we were cooking some meals without any oil or fat, now I understand why. I'll try to reduce it as much as I can (but even now I do not exagerrate:)

Thanks gentle fist for the comment and ofcourse eating with less oil has its benefits and not only health but also financial too as oilk is one of the big expenses in average household budget every month.

Yes we need to be careful these days. When I think what fats were used in the 50s in the UK when I was a kid. Lawdy lawdy

Right ethel we can not be more careful about fats these days.. since 1950s lots have changed. During those days kids played out in field cricket, hockey, football, swimming and other sports which consumed fats but today they play computer games, farm ville and so on

Very Informative hub sweetie. Agree with most of your points, but we youngsters need to have oil though in moderation. Anything in excess is not good.

Hi :)

I think that this is an important subject.

Though I rarely used to fry food, I have recently started stir-frying, with small amounts of olive oil and / or coconut oil.

I used to use extra virgin olive oil, until I was told that, though superior and healthy in salads, it isn't suitable for cooking.

I didn't know that cheeses have lots of fats too. My parents have high triglycerides in their blood so I keep the oil in our food at a minimum if I can't use none at all.

Informative hub! :)

Hi itops, cheese is made from milk and does have high levels of Cholesterol and yes it is good that you keep oils to minimum.

Great advice. It is tempting to spread globs of margerine, and butter on biscuits. We use too much oil. Thanks for this valuable information. God Bless You.
