People of countries like India, pakistan , Bangladesh and other such countries face a peculiar problem. They are neither white nor black but in between and often called Brown. Now the problem is brown comes in many shades from being Fair skin to dark skin. Unfortunately being ruled by white people for countless years, we have what my very close friend calls slave
mentality. ( Please readers it is just a blog on fairness creams and not a statement to hurt , as we Indians take offense on each and everything even if it is truth someone is saying. SO if i offended someone then i am sorry). SO the girls who are fair ( but not as fair as white girls or boys) get more attention from the boys even if they dont have beautiful features. Thus the demand to lighten the colour of the skin is hugh in girls in countries like India and brown people must be 33% of the total population of the world which would come out to be 2 billion people so you can see how big the market is for the fairness creams.
How do fairness creams work: We must know how a person gets skin colour. There is a pigment in the body called Melanin. Now more the melanin in the skin the darker the skin is. Melanin has its own useful effects like it blocks cancer causing rays of the sun so you would find that coloured people get less skin cancer than white people and also coloured people get less sun burns. Now fairness creams block the Secretion of the melanin in the skin thus making it less cloured.
It also stops sun rays to tan your skin so the skin looks more fair. It has been eatimated that you can look up to 20% more fair then you are. But the natural colour of the skin will not change.

Side effects or harmful effects:
1. They work so long you keep using them, once you stop using them you return to your original colour soon.
2. Sunblocking ajents in the cream prevent sun rays reaching to you skin and since they are required to make Vit D in the body so the biggest source of Vit. D is gone.
3.Melanin helps fighting cancer and sun burns ( evident from % of coloured people fall to these diseases as compared to White people)
4. The comopanies never disclose exactly which ingradient is used and in how much quantity.
5. Most of the fairness creams have Steriods which should always be used under Medical guidence. The use of steriods
without supervision can lead to very harmful side effects.
6. Strong creams have hydroquinone, which is a very strong bleeching ajent and can bleach the skin. More than 4% of this hydroquinone can cause very harmful side effects on your skin like it can make skin patchy and sensitive to sun.
7.The creams also boast of having Vitamins to nourish the skin but many contain Vitamins like Koiic acid and Retinoic acid
which make skin intolerant to Sun and can be burnt quite easily by sun rays.
8. Some cream can contain mercury in them which can lead to other toxic problems of heavy metal in the body.
9. Alleric reactions like itiching, rashes can always be there.
Every person is beautiful, from with in and outside. If god wanted to have to someother colour then he would have given you
that. In long run it is always heart wins over the beauty so we must make out hearts more beautiful rather than our face.
And even if you still want to have a lighter skin colour then please use the natural packs. They make skin healthy and
young in looks. The home-made face packs including the ingredients like aloevera, turmeric, honey, milk, lemon juice etc
always provide lighter skin tones, with out any side effects.

If people knew about the ill effects of such products they wouldn' t want themselves to be fair then.There are plenty of products in the market for fairness and i myself don' t feel if you go for a good branded one they would cause you any harm, though i am not sure whether it really makes you fair or not.

I am part Asian so I know about the whitening and fairness creams on sale all over Asia from India all the way to SM and Landmark stores selling it in The Philippines. I am amazed by the comments some western women make about Asian women trying to look more fair, as they are busy trying to get more tanned! This is brilliant! However, I don't use the creams myself. You are correct sweetie1. It is true in the Black race when the constant mirror of beauty is held up the reflection is that of blond blue eyed creatures.
Many in my race, back in the day, used whitening creams to lighten their complexion, hence Michael Jackson's transformation. I don't feel that we strive as much anymore due to higher self esteem. Excellent hub

As you said it, the "slave mentality" created by imperialism is the real problem. Brown skin is absolutely beautiful. In fact, the most gorgeous Indian women, Like Aishwaria, Rani, Priety Zinta, and the hundreds of stars that come out of India are drop dead gorgeous. Here in Miami, we have a very diverse ethnic environment. In my work, there are north Europeans, a Spanish guy (me), Anglo Americans, a black American, and some Latin guys. Often, when I am checking one of those "beautiful Indian women" blogs that so often are posted in Hubpages, the other guys come around and we comment on the incredible beauty of Indian women. We are aware that the average undernourished Indian woman is not like those adresses, But it is not the skin color that reduces their beauty; it is the harsh life conditions that reduce their beauty. All the guys agree that silky jet black hair and brown skin is amazingly beautiful. In fact, if that is your actual picture, you are drop dead gorgeous yourself!

thanks gramon for the comment and yes it is my friend who use this term slave mentality.. i did not say ever that darker coloured women are not beautiful.. Infact they are but it is the perception and tv which makes them feel not so beautiful. Darker coloured girls dont get married here ( in arranged marriages) easily and their parents have to run to so many marriage beureus and then guys and their families rejecting them clearly telling she is too dark..does have negative effect on girls mentality.

I din't want to imply that you think that brown girls are less beautiful. I have noticed in Indian movies that even in the casting they have color prejudices. I definitely assumme that your idea is to create awareness because you disagree with discrimination on the basis of color. in my comments, I am supporting your idea. The point is that for those of us out of the environment of discrimination, color becomes part of the person's beauty. I do enjoy reading your posts!

Hi Gma Goldie well i know it may not be girls fault to look as guys want it but it is fault of TV and movies where we girls have to look so good to get noticed. May be it is play to sell various creams and lotions for fairness and tanning. Also Indian guys would go for a fairer girls ( not white but fair among brown) that many girls who are not very fair feel insecure and low in confidence

Can we file a case against such a company for alleging unfair trade practice and seeking an order of discontinuance as well as prohibition of this unfair trade practice and also to issue corrective advertisement to neutralize the effect of the misleading advertisements? Just to get rid of the pigmentation, pimples, dark skin we follow what ever is served in the market & in the beauty parlours. But we are kept in the darkness about the dark truth, myths of these so-called wonder creams.

no one is beutiful on the inside. You either got it or you dont. Why do people keep thinking wishfully. Do something about it if you dont like it. If someone wants to bleach why dont you let them? i dont see anyone saying this about people that are tanning. When they are gorgeous in the first place.

Hi symthe, looks like you are very bitter, may be some past hurts, but let meassure lots of people are very beautiful from inside ( if you know its meaning) and yes people tan but i was talking about how girls in our race are made to feel inferior who aint fair looking. Mind you not white but fair looking, when she turns white again she is not liked.
its mostly parents and insensitive adults or complete strangers who comment on peoples face that they r dark or fair and speak of dark skin as a disadvantage its makes even the confident one to feel irritated by the attention skin color gets than the person himself or herself
